___ Oil for diesel engines ____
Since autumn 2004 "Iecavnieks&Co" Ltd. has been doing experimental transformation
of diesel engines to run them with 100% rapeseed oil. Oil is recognized in the
Europe Union's common legislative acts as a fuel: directive of the European Parliament
and of the Council 2003/30/EK (8 May 2003) "on the promotion of the use of bio
fuels or other renewable fuels for transport" that defines "pure vegetable oil"
as a bio fuel: pure vegetable oil from oil plants produced through pressing, extraction
or comparable procedures, crude or refined but chemically unmodified, can also
be used as bio fuel in specific cases where its use is compatible with the type
of engines involved and the corresponding emission requirements. National legislation
to implement this directive is not completely drawn up ("Bio fuel law" adopted
on 15.04.2005.) and such an engine transformation can be considered only as an
experiment in frame of what the enterprise works in collaboration with the Latvian
University of Agriculture, Technical Faculty, Institute of internal combustion
engines.
Technical solutions
(for conversion) for different units are different. Nowadays steps for conversion
to have a vehicle with a 2-tank system are:
-
to set up a second fuel tank with incorporated heated oil pumping filter for rapeseed oil, and fuel leads connected to the diesel engine supply block;

its necessary to draw in a heat exchanger that heats rapeseed oil to 70- 90°C before oil arrival into the high pressure fuel pump. If necessary another incandescent electric heater with thermostat could be incorporated to stabilize temperature and delay motor starting if the oil is not hot enough;
-
important to have distance guidance due to two electromagnetic three-way valves that let you easily switch the engine from diesel to rapeseed oil supply (when oil is hot enough).
Rapeseed oil needs to be heated to reduce filter resistance, prevent burns in
nozzles and combustion cameras and ensure spray out quality. Rapeseed oil viscosity
is significantly reduced by heating and at 80°C it is essential the same as mineral
diesel viscosity. In reality: the vehicle is started with diesel and driven till
the engine warms up and the rapeseed oil temperature reaches 70-80°C, then the
supply is switched to rapeseed oil. Switching back to diesel should be done 5
to 10 minutes before the motor is switched off so that rapeseed oil is absent
in the high pressure pump, filters and pipes.
"Iecavnieks&Co" Ltd. has converted its own agricultural vehicles for running on
oil: 3 JOHN DEERE tractors, CLAAS grain harvesters, 11 road trucks and 4 self
discharging lorries (MAZ, MAN). These units have become more economical (in exploitation).
